FireFeatures is a full service design & build firm specializing in custom, site-specific work, including firebowls, water and wind features, memorials, markers, environmental sculpture, as well as product design and manufacturing. FireFeatures is the creation of trained sculptor and architectural designer, Elena Colombo, and is a division of parent company Colombo Construction Corporation.
“I am ever inspired by the elemental nature of fire, and the primal need we have for it. I wanted to restore the hearth as a ceremonial place and as a point of convergence.”
Fire sculptures are fabricated in steel, bronze, and stone, in clear forms that are at once simple and elegant, ancient and modern; extending architecture and living space further into the landscape to a destination and communal gathering point.
With a fascination for the elemental nature of fire, and inspired in 2001 by a stockpile of damp wood that wouldn’t light, Elena envisioned an flip-switch outdoor bonfire connected to her house propane tank. The ‘firebowl’ in its first iteration, was a simple concrete planter retrofitted with a burner from a swimming pool heater. Et voila!
Hotelier Andre Balaz was the first to commission a Firebowl for his fashionable Shelter Island and Miami boutique hotels. The landmark Hotel Roosevelt installed ten custom versions, designer Jonathan Adler, celebrity Lisa Marie Presley and many other luminaries installed them on their properties to bring the unique ambiance to their guests.
FireFeatures work has advanced in the industry to become standalone works of art, and have been in receipt of many design awards and commissions, most notably is the ‘Bridge’ at SteelStacks for the Bethlehem Steel revitalization project - the first Placemaking commission by the National Endowment for the Arts. Elena’s work is truly original and yet instantly recognizable by those who gather around them in the world’s most prestigious resorts, wineries, and homes.
